Exemption categories:
The following categories of people are entitled to exemption from NHS prescription charges: A. children under 16; B. full-time students aged 16, 17 or 18 who are in full-time education; C. men and women aged 60 and over; D. pregnant women and women who have had a child in the previous 12 months who hold a valid
maternity exemption certificate; E. people suffering from the following conditions who hold a valid exemption certificate:
- forms of hypoadrenalism (including Addison's disease) for which specific substitution therapy is
essential;
- diabetes insipidus or other forms of hypopituitarism;
- diabetes mellitus (except where treatment is by diet alone);
- hypoparathyroidism and hypothyroidism;
- myasthenia gravis;
- myxoedema;
- epilepsy requiring continuous anti-convulsive therapy;
- continuing physical disability which prevents the patient from leaving his residence without the help of
another person.
- patients undergoing treatment for cancer or the effects of cancer may now apply for a medical
exemption certificate; F. people with a valid Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC);
A PPC may save you money; they cost £29.10 for 3 months and £104.00 for 12 months (offering a
saving to anyone who needs 4 or more items in 3 months or more than 14 items in 12 months). To
help spread the cost, you can now choose to pay for the 12 month PPC by 10 Direct Debit monthly
installments. Ask for Form FP95, ring 0845 850 0030 or visit www.ppa.org.uk/PPC to buy your PPC. G. war pensioners with a valid exemption certificate (for accepted disablement only); L. people with a current NHS Charge Certificate for full help (Certificate HC2); X. was prescribed free-of-charge contraceptives; H. people getting Income Support (IS) or income-related Employment and Support Allowance [ESA(IR)]; K. people getting Income based Jobseekers Allowance; M. people entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate (or award notice or decision
letter showing annual income of £15,276 or less) S. people with a partner who gets Pension Credit Guarantee Credit; others. some prescriptions issued by HMP Service;
Note:
The regulations apply to England. Arrangements in Scotland, Wales (see below) and Northern Ireland are a matter for their Devolved Administrations and are currently free of any prescription charge.
NHS Prescription Charge is £7.65 from 1st April 2012 for each medicine or appliance
(Compression Hosiery is charged at £14.40 for a pair of anklets, kneecaps or stockings.
Some other items may have more than one charge, ask your Pharmacist to explain.
