Thush in Men and Women
Thrush is most commonly caused by a type of fungus known as Candida albicans. The Candida species of fungus is found naturally in the vagina, and is usually harmless. However, if the conditions in the vagina change, Candida albicans can cause the symptoms of thrush.

About the condition
Thrush
Vaginal thrush is a common condition caused by a yeast infection in the vagina and surrounding area.
The infection is usually Candida albicans, but is also known as candida or vulvovaginal candidiasis.
Candida lives harmlessly on the skin, in the mouth, gut and vagina and is normally kept under control by harmless bacteria.
But sometimes conditions change and the yeast increases rapidly, causing symptoms of discharge and irritation.
Symptoms
You will notice the symptoms of vaginal thrush in your vulva. The vulva is made up of the:
* outer part of the vagina
* clitoris
* two pairs of lips surrounding the entrance to the vagina, called the labia majora (the outer pair) and the labia minora (the inner pair)
The symptoms of thrush can include:
* vulval itching
* vulval soreness and irritation
* pain, or discomfort, during sexual intercourse (superficial dyspareunia)
* pain, or discomfort, during urination (dysuria)
* vaginal discharge, although this is not always present. The discharge is usually odourless. It can be thin and watery, or thick and white, like cottage cheese.
The Causes of Thrush
Vaginal thrush is caused by a fungus that occurs naturally in the vagina. A type of fungus called Candida albicans is the most common cause of vaginal thrush, although a number of other types of Candida fungi are sometimes responsible.
Candida fungi
The main types of Candida fungi that cause thrush are:
* Candida albicans, which is responsible for 80-92% of cases
* Candida glabrata, which is responsible for about 5% of cases
The remaining cases of thrush may be caused by:
* Candida tropicalis
* Candida parapsilosis
* Candida krusei
* Candida kefyr
* Candida guilliermondii
* Saccharomyces cerevisiae
The Candida type of fungus is found in 20-50% of women who do not have any symptoms of thrush. It is believed that other changes must be taking place in the vagina to cause the symptoms of thrush.
Advice
As well as using antifungal medicines, there are a number of things you can do to help ease thrush.
* Wash your vaginal area with non-perfumed soap and water, or water alone. Avoid using highly-scented soaps, shower gels, vaginal deodorants or douches.
* Avoid using latex condoms, spermicidal creams and lubricants if they cause irritation. Instead, try using non-allergenic condoms.
* Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes made of artificial fibres such as nylon.
* Whenever possible, wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothes rather than tight ones.
Some women who suffer regularly from vaginal thrush use live yoghurt - either as a cream or on a tampon - to help treat it.
About the Medicine
Treatments
The main cause of altitude sickness is going too high too quickly. Given enough time, your body will adapt to the decrease in oxygen at a specific altitude. This process is known as acclimatisation and generally takes one to three days at any given altitude, e.g. if you climb to 3,000 metres and spend several days at that altitude, your body will acclimatise to 3,000 metres. If you then climb to 5,000 metres your body has to acclimatise once again.
Antifungal treatments for thrush can be taken by mouth (orally), or by inserting them into your vagina (intravaginal pessaries). Oral and intravaginal treatments have been found to be equally effective in treating thrush. Around 80% of women are successfully treated.
Topical creams can treat sore parts of the vulva (the external sexual organs).
In all cases of thrush, go back to your GP if your symptoms have not cleared up after treatment.
Oral antifungal treatment
Oral antifungal treatment is usually recommended for 12 to 16-year-old girls who have vaginal thrush. It is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding (see below). The two oral antifungal treatments that are usually prescribed are fluconazole or itraconazole.
Oral antifungal treatments can cause side effects, including:
* nausea (feeling sick)
* vomiting
* headache
* diarrhoea
* flatulence (wind)
* constipation (being unable to empty your bowels)
* bloating
* an upset stomach
Intravaginal pessaries
Intravaginal pessaries that are often prescribed for thrush include:
* clotrimazole
* econazole
* miconazole
Intravaginal pessaries do not cause as many side effects as oral antifungal treatments, but they can:
* be awkward to use
* cause a mild burning sensation, slight redness, or itching
* damage latex condoms and diaphragms, so use another form of contraception while using intravaginal pessaries
About Gyno-Daktarin
Gyno-Daktarin pessaries, vaginal capsules and cream all contain the active ingredient miconazole. Miconazole is an antifungal medicine used to treat infections with fungi and yeasts. Gyno-Daktarin products are used to treat fungal infections of the vagina, such as vaginal thrush.
Miconazole kills fungi and yeasts by interfering with their cell membranes. It works by stopping the fungi from producing a substance called ergosterol, which is an essential component of fungal cell membranes. The disruption in production of ergosterol disrupts the fungal cell membrane, causing holes to appear in it.
The cell membranes of fungi are vital for their survival. They keep unwanted substances from entering the cells and stop the contents of the cells from leaking out. As miconazole causes holes to appear in the cell membranes, essential constituents of the fungal cells can leak out. This kills the fungi and treats the infection.
Miconazole also has some antibacterial action and kills certain bacteria that may also be present in the infection.
Side Effects
Just because a side effect is stated here does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
* Vaginal irritation.
* Vaginal itching and burning sensation, especially at the start of treatment.
* Pelvic cramps.
* Hives.
* Rash.
Dosage
Use the creams for atleast 14 days non-stop without sexual intercourse to avoid reoccurrence and spreading. Use the medicine as directed by the product information leaflets and your doctor.
Prevention
Some women who have vaginal thrush use probiotics, such as live yoghurts, to help treat and prevent the condition. There is no medical evidence that probiotics are effective, but there is no reason to think that they could be unsafe.
Other techniques you may wish to try include:
* wearing loose fitting underwear
* avoiding tight or synthetic (man-made) clothing, such as leggings or tight jeans
* avoiding perfumed soap, bubble bath and vaginal deodorant
* making sure your vagina is well lubricated before sexual intercourse, e.g. by using a lubricating gel to prevent any damage to the vagina
* when you go the toilet, make sure that you wipe the genital area from front to back
* if you are prescribed antibiotics for another condition and this has given you thrush in the past, speak to your GP about it
