About the condition
Motion / Travel Sickness
'Motion sickness is due to the brain receiving conflicting signals about the body's spatial orientation,' explains Dr Akhtar Hussain, a head and neck specialist at Grampian University Hospital in Aberdeen.
In other words messages coming from the eyes, ears and muscles don't match. The brain becomes confused and triggers a sense of nausea and dizziness.
Symptoms
Symptoms of motion sickness usually begin with:
* a feeling of discomfort in your upper abdomen,
* nausea, and
* an increasing feeling of being unwell.
These symptoms can then be followed by a second, more severe, set of symptoms, including:
* pale skin,
* cold sweat,
* dizziness, and
* vomiting.
A number of people may also experience some additional symptoms. These include:
* rapid, shallow breathing (hyperventilation),
* headaches,
* drowsiness, and
* fatigue.
The Causes
The types of travel most likely to cause motion sickness are:
* boat and ship travel,
* air travel,
* car travel, and
* train travel.

Self-care
In some cases, you may be able to relieve the symptoms of motion sickness by trying these self-care techniques:
* Minimise your head and body movements. If possible, get a seat or cabin in the middle of a boat or plane because this is where you will experience the least movement.
* Fix your vision on a stable object, such as the horizon. Avoid reading as this can make symptoms worse. You may find that closing your eyes helps to relieve symptoms.
* If possible, open windows or move to the top deck of a ship in order to get a good supply of fresh air.
* Try distracting your brain by listening to music while focusing on your breathing or carrying out a mental activity, such as counting backwards from 100.
* Avoid eating large meals or drinking alcohol before travelling.
Medication
A widely used medicine for the treatment of motion sickness is hyoscine (also known as scopolamine). It is thought that hyoscine works by blocking some of the nerve signals sent from the vestibular system that can cause nausea and vomiting.
You will need to take hyoscine before you begin travelling for it to be effective. Hyoscine is available from pharmacists as an over-the-counter (OTC) medication.
If you are about to undertake a long journey, such as a sea journey, hyoscine patches can be applied to the skin every three days.
Common side effects of hyoscine include: * drowsiness,
* blurred vision, and
* dry mouth.
Due to these side effects you should never take hyoscine if you plan on driving for some or all of a car journey.
Rarer side effects include: * constipation,
* vomiting, and
* hallucinations and mental confusion, especially in the very young or elderly.
Hyoscine may not be suitable if you are: * pregnant,
* have a history of heart disease,
* have a history of kidney or liver problems,
* you have an overactive thyroid, or
* are aged 70 or over.
If any of the above applies to you, it is recommended that you consult your GP and/or pharmacist before taking hyoscine.
